Old School Anchor Tattoos- The Meanings
Originally Sailors who crossed the Atlantic sea for the first time got a anchor tattooed on their arm to symbolise their trip. The anchor tattoo is one of the oldest tattoo designs ever.
The meaning of the anchor design is safety and stability it’s related to people in the Navy, Sailors or people who work on ships.
The Navy and Mariners had the tattoo and would usually associate a picture of their ship or the number on their uniform. This was to show pride and to represent America.
It is also believed that it was common amongst Pirates also. The most common tattoo for a Pirate is of course the skull and cross bones.
Also the anchor has a link to Christianity, Christians used the anchor to replace the cross during a bad time. They used the anchor as a hidden secret cross.
The anchor tattoo design can represent someone in a relationship, Some couples may have matching designs to show their commitment in their relationship.
You may have a anchor design which has ‘Mum’, ‘Dad’ family members name this would symbolise a strong relationship.
Today the old school anchor tattoo design is common amongst men and women.
